Junior Captain Snapshot for 2018
This little project has been in the works for a few months. I did not do this alone and had to lean on many friends to pull this information together. 
Airlinepilotcentral is an awesome resource for information. The “junior captain” line on most of the airline profiles is great. But if you are researching an airline to target, the most junior captain date doesn’t give the full story. Many airlines have numerous bases and aircraft to choose from and there can be a huge difference between a city you want to live in and an aircraft you want to spend part of your career on versus what may be published as the most junior captain hire date. That is why this report exists. I would like to update it quarterly, but reviewing how much time it took to put this together, that could be a stretch for now.
- The data presented are numbers that are published. They aren’t from some friend's friend who had a jump seater say that his neighbor's uncle just told him that the American 787 CA bid just went to a 2015 hire.
- Also, as the title declares, these numbers are just a “snapshot” in time. They can and will change quickly. But at least they give a general feel for a moment in time of a position that is often scrutinized within the industry.
- And lastly, they also represent the most junior pilot who is holding that position, and by extension, is sitting reserve. Depending on the airlines contract, that can be a good thing, and actually can go senior, especially on a wide body.
- You will also see places, especially at the large, legacy carriers, where data is missing. The multiple mergers of many of these airlines has made finding some of the new-hire dates for these seats very challenging to obtain. If I couldn’t be certain of a number I left it blank.
